Hollywood Director comes to ACM

Storied Hollywood Director and Producer Gary Shimokawa will come to UH West Oʻahu and Leeward Community College this fall as artist-in-residence and will teach CM 320A Topics in Creative Producing: Representations of Film/TV Production as part of the University’s creative media program and DMED 197 at Leeward Community College.

Shimokawa directed and produced numerous hit television shows including “Welcome Back, Kotter,” “Good Times,” “All in the Family,” “Archie Bunker’s Place,” “The Facts of Life,” “Night Court,” “ALF,” “The Golden Girls” and more, and comes to UH West Oʻahu from New York University where he is an associate professor of the arts at the Tisch School of the Arts, Kanbar Institute of Film and Television. Shimokawa won two Directors Guild of America Awards for Outstanding Directorial Achievement in a Comedy Series for “The Golden Girls” and a Peabody Award for Best Comedy Show of the Year for “Archie Bunker’s Place.” He is a member of the Directors Guild of America as well as the Coalition of Asian Pacific Entertainers.

UH West Oʻahu’s Artist-in-Residence program is supported by the University of Hawaiʻi System Academy for Creative Media.
