SIGN YOUR CLASS UP FOR HIFF’S 2019 EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

It’s that time of year again, and the Hawai’i International Film Festival is preparing for an exciting 2019 Fall Festival Program. As part of the festivities of the 39th Annual Hawai’i International Film Festival (HIFF), students from local public and private schools are invited to participate in our FREE educational programs during the festival from November 7 – 17, 2019.

There is no limit to the the number of activities that your class(es) may sign-up for. To get more information on these programs, including filmmaker bios and film descriptions please visit our website at www.hiff.org/education

Below are more details of the programs available, and you can sign-up by completing the brief online sign-up form found on the right side of the linked page. All forms must be completed by October 1, 2019. Please note: reservations will be accepted on a first-come, first-served basis!

Students if you’re interested in any of these opportunities, please speak with your instructor.

Guest Filmmaker Program
Visiting and local filmmakers will enrich classes such as media production, journalism, language arts, foreign language and social studies with class visits and guest lectures. These visits offer the logistical benefit of bringing speakers into classrooms rather than requiring field trips. Students will learn first-hand from successful professionals in the filmmaking/media industry.

Cultural & Visual Literacy Program
HIFF’s Cultural & Visual Literacy Program (CVLP) provides FREE theater screenings of outstanding HIFF films that are rarely available in Hawai’i. These films are applicable to many subjects; teachers in previous years have incorporated CVLP films into classes ranging from social studies and language arts to media production and character education. Whenever possible, HIFF invites the film’s director to participate in a post-screening discussion with students.

HIFF Student Showcase – CALL FOR ENTRIES!
HIFF will present the best short films submitted by primary and secondary students from Hawai’i. It will be a great opportunity for students to view top-notch films produced by their peers. Students whose films are selected for the Student Showcase will be invited to introduce their work and to participate in post-screening Q&A sessions with audience members at the Regal Dole Cannery Theaters (students will be responsible for their own travel.) HIFF’s Student Showcase is open to the general public and is free to attend. Students can submit their work for consideration until September 1st at: filmfreeway.com/hiff

Daniel K. Inouye Institute (DKII) – CALL FOR ENTRIES!
2019 marks the 60th anniversary of statehood in Hawai’i. Featuring archived items of historical importance from the DKII collection, student filmmakers will be asked to reflect on what this moment in time means to them, and where they see Hawaii going in the next 40 years of our centennial of statehood. Students may use these items as inspiration directly or indirectly in their work, as well as draw upon current day objects that reflect modern day themes and perspectives.

Finalists will be selected by a panel of judges to present at HIFF 2019 in a special presentation screening as part of the Festival’s annual Student Showcase. These finalists will be given industry filmmaker badges that will provide them unprecedented access to HIFF (free screenings, panel talks, party entry). Finalists can win cash and camera equipment! Students will also have the opportunity to have a meet and greet with a VIP guest. Last year’s VIP guest was Harry Shum, Jr!

Submissions must be received by October 1, 2019 in order to be considered. For more information click here!

Student Volunteer Opportunities
(open to students in grades 9 to 12 on O’ahu) During the year, the festival needs hundreds of volunteers to ensure that audiences and guests have a great time at HIFF events. Students from schools all over O’ahu have a great time volunteering and taking part in a fun and exciting cultural event.
